There are plenty of winter sun destinations around the globe. But few can match the value and convenience of the Canary Islands for European travellers. As these seven specks of Spain are just four hours flying time from major markets such as the UK and offer year round sunshine at a fraction of the cost of destinations in the Caribbean and the Far East.
The Canaries also offer all of the familiarity of Spain – the favourite destination for British holidaymakers in the world. Along with fantastic beaches and loads of things to do and see.
The islands are not all the same – and Lanzarote, the fourth largest, has a weird volcanic terrain made by eruptions around 250 years ago. Which plastered the interior of the island in lava. Making what is now one of the most well loved National Parks in Spain, known locally as The Fire Mountains.
This winter, flights to Lanzarote from the UK will be cheaper than ever before. As a number of the leading low cost airlines – in the form of Ryanair and easyjet – have now started to really compete on this route. Ryanair in particular have opened up 16 new services to the island from airports across the UK. With headline returns being flagged up for as small as £9.99.
Accommodation on Lanzarote is pretty attractive too. With loads of Lanzarote holiday villas and hotels for visitors to select from. Both in the main resorts of Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca and across the rural countryside as well.
Playa Blanca is the best bet for anyone in search of a villa holiday. Whilst Puerto del Carmen offers the larger range of holiday apartments in Lanzarote .
Away from the beach and the pool Lanzarote offers loads for visitors to do and see. As well as the weird and wonderful Fire Mountains there are lots of pretty white washed villages to explore. Such as Haria, Yaiza and Maguez. And the historic cobbled streets of Teguise – once the island capital and still home to a treasure trove of colonial architecture.
It’s an simple island to explore as well. Although local bus services are pretty infrequent outside of the main resorts. As a result most visitors tent to hire a car or book themselves onto one of the many guided tours available. Which visit all of the key attractions such as the Jameos del Agua, Mirador del Rio and the Cactus Garden.
