For many holidaymakers, packing may very well be the simplest part of the travelling process. For countless others, it’s a huge hurdle towards a stress free holiday. With the majority of holidaymakers over packing for their getaway, most belongings could use a “once over” before placing them all into a suitcase.
If there’s one reason to re-assess your packing habits, it’s that travelling light instantly makes travelling simpler. No one wants to end up dragging a huge, heavy suitcase – or two – around, particularly in unfamiliar surroundings. Yet many people don’t reckon about this when they’re justifying all those extra outfits or shoes during the packing process. In fact, some might only start to realise they’ve over-packed once their chosen airline weighs their luggage, perhaps charging some overweight fees. Of course, packing light may not seem so simple to some holidaymakers, particularly if they’re used to taking a lot of belongings with them on their travels. The truth is that it’s simpler than one might reckon. By following a few tips, even those most guilty of over-packing can significantly cut the amount of luggage they take with them.
When it comes to over packing, two of the largest culprits are outfits and shoes. Many people like to give themselves choices with regard to outfits, for instance, packing a few formal outfits when they’re likely to use only one during their holiday, or perhaps bringing ten of their favourite T-shirts and tops. This mode of thinking can quickly have your luggage piling up. Of course, you’ll need to consider the climate of your holiday destination, as well as the length of your holiday. As a general rule, you should stick to a minimal number of outfits – for instance, one formal outfit, one for cooler weather, and two for daytime wear, for a one-week holiday. Shoes are another huge problem for over-packers, as they’re heavy and take up a lot of room. A excellent method to cutting down your shoes is to stick to one formal pair, and one walking pair. Some people like to take flips flops too, which are usually simple to slip into a suitcase side pocket.
Of course, you’ll want to bring enough socks and underwear for your entire holiday. Don’t empty an entire drawer of socks and underwear into your suitcase. Remember that if you fall small, you could always buy a pair or two at your destination. So while you want to be prepared with these items, don’t overdo it.
Toiletries are usually another major downfall for over packers, as they’re both bulky and heavy. If you really want to cut down on your packing, pack a toothbrush, toothpaste, and perhaps some deodorant – and buy the rest when you get to your destination. Many hotels provide these basics anyway, which means you’ll have them upon your arrival. Packing shampoo, body wash, lotions, and a number of other toiletries at home will just contribute to too much luggage.
Finally, many people like to read on their holidays, which usually means packing a book – or three. It’s understandable to feel ambitious with regard to reading on holiday; but keep in mind that books are bulky and heavy. If you want to read while travelling, choose one book and make it paperback. If you end reading it and want to start on another, you can always buy one at your destination. Once you’re finished reading your books, give them away to other travellers or donate them.
So, whether you’re plotting to stay in a beach hut in Thailand, or in New York hotels during your city break in the States, keep your packing to a minimum – it’s sure to result in a more relaxing holiday.
